Cooling-Off Period Before Getting Divorced?

Currently in Colorado, you must wait 90 days from the time you file for divorce until you can be legally divorced.  A Colorado legislator now wants to add a waiting period to the time before you can file for divorce.  Dubbed the "Dr. Laura" bill, State Senator Lundberg wants to make it harder for couples to "bail" out of marriage by requiring parents to attend educational counseling about the impact of divorce before filing.  Women's and domestic violence groups have opposed the proposal.  While we will have to wait to see what happens regarding the bill, we cannot discount the impact of divorce on children.  We recommend family counseling, as it can be very helpful in mitigating the effects of divorce on children.  To read more about the bill click this LINK.
